Sealants

Dental sealants are a simple, preventive treatment that helps protect teeth from cavities—especially the back molars, where deep grooves can trap food and bacteria. At Crosstown Hershey Dental, sealants are commonly recommended for children and teens as soon as permanent molars come in, but they can also be a great option for adults who are prone to decay or have naturally deep pits and fissures.

Even with good brushing habits, the chewing surfaces of molars can be difficult to clean thoroughly. Sealants act like a protective shield by sealing out plaque and food particles from these hard-to-reach areas. The result is a smoother surface that is easier to keep clean and significantly less likely to develop cavities.

The sealant process is quick, comfortable, and non-invasive—often completed in a single visit with no numbing required. First, the tooth is cleaned and dried. Next, the enamel is gently conditioned so the sealant bonds securely. A thin, tooth-colored protective coating is then applied to the chewing surface and hardened with a special curing light. Once set, the sealant immediately begins protecting the tooth during everyday eating and chewing.

Sealants can last for several years with normal wear, and your dentist will check them during routine exams to make sure they remain intact. If a sealant becomes worn or chipped, it can usually be repaired or replaced easily.

When combined with regular cleanings, fluoride, and good home care, dental sealants are an effective way to prevent cavities and support long-term oral health. Crosstown Hershey Dental is happy to evaluate whether sealants are right for you or your child and help keep your smile protected.
