Dental bridges are a reliable restorative option for replacing one or more missing teeth and restoring a complete, functional smile. At Crosstown Hershey Dental, bridges are designed to look natural, improve chewing and speech, and help prevent the shifting and bite changes that can occur when a tooth is missing.
A bridge “bridges” the gap by placing an artificial tooth (called a pontic) between two supporting teeth or restorations. Traditional bridges are anchored to the teeth on either side of the space, which are prepared and fitted with crowns to hold the bridge securely. In some situations, other bridge types may be considered depending on the location of the missing tooth, the health of nearby teeth, and your overall bite.
Replacing missing teeth is about more than appearance. When a gap is left untreated, neighboring teeth can drift, the opposing tooth may over-erupt, and the bite can become uneven. Over time, this may contribute to jaw discomfort, increased wear, and difficulty keeping the area clean. A well-made bridge helps maintain alignment, supports facial structure, and spreads chewing forces more evenly.
The bridge process usually involves two visits. First, your dentist prepares the supporting teeth, takes precise impressions (often digitally), and places a temporary bridge while your custom restoration is crafted. At your follow-up appointment, the final bridge is fitted, adjusted for comfort, and cemented in place.
With good brushing, flossing, and regular cleanings, many bridges last for years. Special flossing tools or water flossers can help keep the area beneath the pontic clean. Crosstown Hershey Dental will help you decide if a bridge is the right solution and create a result that feels comfortable and looks great.
