Scaling and Root Planing

> Dental Services

Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning treatment used to manage gum disease and restore healthier gums. At Crosstown Hershey Dental, this periodontal service is recommended when plaque and tartar build up below the gumline and cause inflammation, bleeding, gum recession, or periodontal “pockets” around the teeth. Because gum disease can progress quietly, your dentist may recommend scaling and root planing after a comprehensive exam and measurements of pocket depth.

Scaling removes hardened tartar (calculus) and bacteria from the tooth surface and beneath the gums, where a regular cleaning can’t reach. Root planing smooths the root surfaces to help prevent bacteria from reattaching and to encourage the gums to tighten and heal. Together, these steps reduce infection and create an environment that supports reattachment of gum tissue.

Treatment is typically completed in sections of the mouth, often with local anesthetic for comfort. You may feel mild tenderness afterward, and temporary sensitivity is common—especially to cold. Most patients can return to normal activities the same day, and we’ll provide aftercare instructions to support healing. In some cases, your dentist may recommend antimicrobial rinses or localized antibiotics to further reduce bacteria.

After scaling and root planing, periodontal maintenance visits are often scheduled more frequently than standard cleanings to keep gum disease under control and monitor pocket depths. Good home care—brushing, flossing, and cleaning along the gumline—plays a major role in long-term results.

If your gums bleed, feel swollen, or your breath stays persistently bad, scaling and root planing may be an important step toward stabilizing your gum health. Crosstown Hershey Dental is here to help you protect your smile and prevent future bone and tooth loss.
