Great dental home care is the key to keeping your smile healthy between visits. At Crosstown Hershey Dental, we encourage simple, consistent routines that protect your teeth and gums, prevent cavities, and reduce the risk of gum disease and bad breath. Professional cleanings are important, but your daily habits at home make the biggest difference.

Start by brushing twice a day for two minutes with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Angle the bristles gently toward the gumline and use small, controlled motions to remove plaque where it collects most. Electric toothbrushes can be especially helpful for improving plaque removal and reducing gum inflammation. Replace your brush or brush head every three months, or sooner if bristles fray.

Flossing once daily is just as important as brushing because it cleans between teeth where a toothbrush can’t reach. If traditional floss is difficult, try floss picks, interdental brushes, or a water flosser—especially if you have bridges, implants, or braces. Adding an alcohol-free antimicrobial mouth rinse can help reduce bacteria and support gum health, but it should complement—not replace—brushing and flossing.

Diet also plays a role. Limit frequent snacking, sugary drinks, and acidic beverages like soda or sports drinks. Drink plenty of water, and consider rinsing with water after coffee or acidic foods to help neutralize acids. If you grind or clench your teeth, wear a custom nightguard if recommended to prevent wear and fractures.

Most importantly, tailor your routine to your needs. Crosstown Hershey Dental can recommend the right toothbrush, flossing tools, fluoride products, and techniques based on your gums, restorations, and cavity risk—so you can maintain a healthier smile every day.
