Periodontal, or Gum, disease is a serious infection of the tissues that hold your teeth in place and can destroy the jawbone. It is common but fairly preventable and typically caused by poor oral hygiene that allows plaque to build up on the teeth and harden, inflaming the gums which leads to tooth loss.

Recent medical research has found that there is a definite connection between the health of your mouth and other chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, pregnancy complications and respiratory disease. Many people who have periodontal disease or "gum" disease, are at risk for developing certain heart related health problems. When your gums bleed, bacteria that resides in your mouth can travel throughout your body and end up in your heart. It is very important to brush and floss daily as recommended to help prevent this health risk from occurring.
