Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Wisdom Teeth Extractions: What Patients Should Know

September 12, 2025/in Tooth Extractions, Wisdom Teeth/by admin

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last set of teeth to emerge, usually between ages 17 and 25. For many, these teeth cause crowding, pain, or infection, requiring extraction. Understand the reasons, procedure, and recovery to prepare for this common dental surgery.

Why They Are Removed

Wisdom Teeth ExtractionWisdom teeth often lack space to grow properly, becoming impacted. Impacted teeth may push against neighbors, causing misalignment. They also trap bacteria, leading to cavities and gum disease. Some of them erupt partially, creating flaps of gum tissue that harbor infection. Removing problematic teeth prevents pain and long-term dental issues.

The Extraction Procedure

Dentists or oral surgeons perform wisdom teeth extractions, often with sedation for comfort. After numbing, the surgeon makes incisions to access the teeth. Impacted teeth are often sectioned into pieces for easier removal. Stitches may be placed to aid healing. The procedure typically lasts 45 minutes to an hour, depending on complexity.

Recovery and Aftercare

Rest and avoid strenuous activity for several days. Swelling and mild discomfort are normal, controlled with medication and cold compresses. Soft foods such as mashed potatoes or applesauce promote healing, as does hydration. Avoid smoking, straws, and hard foods to prevent a dry socket.  Likewise, avoid chewing near the surgery site.  Accordingly, full recovery usually takes one to two weeks.  Follow all post operative instructions from your dentist.  Following the guidance of your dentist, ensures a better chance for seamless recovery after wisdom teeth surgery.

Long-Term Benefits

Removing problematic wisdom teeth prevents future pain, infections, and alignment issues. For many, extraction provides long-term relief and preserves oral health. Regular follow-up ensures healing progresses smoothly.

Wisdom teeth extraction is a common, safe procedure that prevents complications. With proper preparation and aftercare, patients recover well and maintain healthier smiles.  Call us today if you need wisdom teeth extraction.  We’ll evaluate your situation and create a personalized treatment plan that meets your needs.
